I) AEL Requirements for Students

1. Regents and Classroom Subjects: Although a grade of 65% or higher is the statewide passing grade, we expect you to score 75% or higher on all Regents exams and in all classroom subjects.

2. Portfolio with Rubrics: You will select your best work based on subject-related rubrics.

3. Type of Diploma: We expect you to get Advanced Regents diplomas.

4. Internships: You will participate in internships in colleges and organizations which honor your interests and strengths. This internship will provide a foundation for a major you will declare in college.

5. Pride Projects: At the end of each semester, your parents and community members will be invited to view your projects and presentations. These presentations can range from oral presentations to models reflective of your culture to environmental community "give back" projects.

6. Collaborative/Peer Work Project: Each year, you will collaborate with a peer on the creation of a model and/or power-point presentation about an environmental issue.

7. Individual Plan Project: Beginning in the ninth grade, all AEL students will work with their advisor to create a personal portfolio that will guide him/her through college and future after graduation.

8. Team Debate: A group of students of four or greater will engage in debates affecting them and/or the environment. For example, debating the pros and cons of recycling around the neighborhood. Half of the group will present the pros and the other half will present the cons of recycling in the community. They will present solutions to the cons and debate as to what is best for the neighborhood and why. A team of judges consisting of students will judge both groups by using rubrics that will measure the essential components of the debate.

9. Advanced Placement Courses: Take at least one college level class at the Brooklyn College campus in the 11th or 12th grade.

10. Carry our School Vision: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively about the interrelationships between the environment and the community.
